Pinterest

Pinterest has always been my mom’s go-to app. Every time there’s a birthday party, grad party, home renovation, or family potluck, she pulls up Pinterest right away. She probably has a million Pinterest boards, all devoted to projects for the family or volunteer events she’s agreed to plan and set up.

Pinterest’s user demographic is mainly women in their mid-twenties to mid-forties. Pinterest isn’t an app people get on and scroll for hours on end every day. It’s mainly accessed when someone is about to embark on a big project, something that they are probably prepared to spend a fairly large amount of money on. This makes Pinterest the perfect environment for brands to advertise on. They have a consumer market with sufficient funds and a willingness to spend right on the other side of the screen.

The biggest event my mom has used Pinterest for in the recent past was probably my graduation party last June. We had a shared Pinterest board we started adding to months prior to the event all the way up unlit a week before. It has decoration ideas, food, seating, and a million other things. The theme was garden party and we chose to have in in the late morning and early afternoon so the food we served could be brunch-inspired. The Pinterest board didn’t have the exact results that the party did, but it helped give a lot of inspiration and aided in our purchasing decisions. We found some really cute floral tablecloths we bought directly from the website linked to the app as well as little paper plates.

Pinterst has established itself as a helpful tool on the internet that promotes community interests as well as the ability to individualize the experience of the user in order to tailor the app’s purpose to their needs. I think more people like my mom would enjoy and interact with social media more if apps were closer to Pinterst’s model.
