Chapter 1: Intro to Social Media Marketing
Social media has been a normal part of my day-to-day life for the better part of my life, but I never really stopped to consider how much intention and thought goes into so much of the media I consume. After reading this chapter, I'm feeling even more excited about my choice to pursue Public Relations and Marketing as a double major.
Section 1.8 discussed the various jobs within social media marketing (SMM) and delved even deeper into the required skillset of a social media manager. Almost every aspect was something I already enjoy or am interested in pursuing. Some of the skills that stuck out to me in particular were having good writing skills and sales and customer service skills, and the ability to be decisive, creative and adaptive. All of these skills are applied to specific tasks associated with social media management, but it seems to boil down to three core aspects:
1. Working with people
2. Using creativity and ingenuity
3. Confident and critical thinking
SMM is here for the long haul and it's constantly changing. This first chapter gave me a better understanding of some of the basic terminology, history and purpose of SMM and I'm excited to keeping learning about and experimenting with it this semester.
