Preparing for Recruits!

This morning has been an absolute whirlwind of excitement as my roommate, Kalyn, and I prepare to host two recruits for an overnight visit. I’m especially excited for these girls to visit for a number of reasons. First of all, they’re our first female recruits to have an overnight visit this year, so I’m definitely feeling the pressure to be a stellar host and make sure their experience is representative of how great the team and ONU is in general. The second and most important reason is because I already know both of these girls and I would be so thrilled if they decided to come to ONU. One of them, Leda, runs for my high school team and the idea of getting to be her teammate for another three years would be such a dream. The other recruit, Ashley, ran for a team the next town over from us, so I raced her for most of high school during cross country, swim, and track. Both of them are such fun people (and great runners) and I just know they would be great additions to the team.

Getting to host them means a lot because of how great my team visit experience was last year when I was being recruited. I remember leaving the visit feeling like I had already made friends with so many people on the team in the less than 24 hours I was with them. I want to give them the same experience, even if they don’t decide this is the school for them, I want them to know they would be welcomed and have a close-knit group of people to rely on if they came here.

Kalyn and I still have a few things to finish up before the recruits arrive tonight. We’ve vacuumed and cleaned up the room, but we still need to track down a couple air mattresses for them to sleep on. Other than that, we need to figure out what to do with them. They arrive in time for dinner with the team, then we’re planning on taking them to JLK, where the team hangs out and studies in the evenings. After that, we’re not really sure. Not sure if you’ve noticed, but Ada isn’t exactly known for its many attractions and activities. If you have a suggestion, be sure to let me know in the comments!

  2. Best of luck! I know it can be stressful but the recruits will certainly like their experience. Just think back to our visits back in the day.
